Look-and-tap system becoming a standard input ? Qualcomm’s latest reference headset, the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2, is a mixed reality device that is likely to be the foundation of Samsung’s upcoming headset. Interestingly, Qualcomm’s marketing photo shows the user with her hand in her lap doing a pinching gesture, which looks similar to the look-and-tap system that Apple has shown on Vision Pro. This raises the question of whether the look-and-tap system will become a new standard input method. The Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 reference headset is made in partnership with Goertek and boasts impressive features such as eye-tracking from Tobii, support for 18.5MP (4,300 × 4,300) per-eye resolution at 90Hz, 12 concurrent cameras, and pancake lenses. The cameras may be used for 2x eye-tracking, 2x RGB passthrough, 4x world-tracking, and 4x depth-sensing. The headset also has hardware IPD adjustment, a microphone array, a 3.5mm headphone port, and Wi-Fi 6/6E/7 support. It is exciting to see the advancements in mixed reality devices and the potential for new input methods. Varjo is launching the XR-4 mixed reality headset for enterprises, with 4K per-eye resolution and passthrough with large field of view. The big news isn't just that the tech is (a lot) better, but also that the price is down by about half -- it now starts at $3990 -- and the software subscription is gone. The XR-4 also comes with inside-out tracking and controllers in the box -- no need to track down Steam accessories, though you do still need to tether it to a high-end gaming PC or workstation. The XR-4 has fixed cameras for mixed reality, but the XR-4 Focal Edition has an autofocus system: the focus shifts to where you're looking in the room. It's wild -- and pricey. The XR-4 Focal Edition is $9990. There are other editions, too: Varjo has defense industry customers who use its headsets to train fighter pilots (or design the planes), so there is an XR-4 Secure Edition manufactured in Finland, certified, and can be configured without outside connectivity. I've spoken to Varjo execs about the XR-4 but I haven't had a chance to demo this in person yet, and I'm eager to rectify that, likely at CES. I have demo'd the Apple Vision Pro, and Apple is definitely targeting some of the same use cases (either initially or down the road). Varjo's ability to keep innovating while lowering prices bodes well for its future. For now, Varjo has plenty of differentiation: it has access to much greater GPU resources, constant power, certifications, and software -- it's already in embedded in many enterprise workflows.
